What a great interview! This is a must-read for new authors.

I've been talking a lot on my blog about the alternatives to the either/or Big6/self-pub battling that's going on in the blogosphere. This is the best post on small publishers I've seen yet. New writers like Mr. Arrogant are reading about successful self-pubbers, and they think it will automatically happen to them. But most of those success stories come from previously Big 6-published authors with a fan base and a huge backlist. They're also usually people who do their own coding and cover design and don't put out thousands of dollars for expenses. Plus they're very, very savvy marketers.

I think you hit the nail right on the head.

It never occurs to most people who download these things that they are hurting anyone by their actions. Pointing this out can make a difference. When I taught high school English, my classes read a story about a boy who was caught shoplifting from a store he worked for. Most of my students did not realize that we all pay for shoplifting with higher prices on the goods we buy. Many changed their attitudes about shoplifting when that was pointed out to them.

The first thing to spring to mind is Facebook; I loathe it, yet feel I must be on there, don't know why. Well I do know a bit - I became involved in a mutual author 'like' program on one of the kindleboards and wasted a good deal of time 'liking' 500 or so pages, and in return received 30 back - so I'm driven out of spite to 'dislike' Facebook with all of its nonsense posts of, 'Oh, having a bad day, must get a cake to cheer me up' and other such rot that appears on my wall.
You might just have inspired me to bin it.
