I don't know a lot about the technical end of computers and search engines, but I am learning more. I recently discovered meta tags. Yeah, I know. I can hear you laughing. But seriously, this stuff is like a car engine to me. (Think foreign language.)
I can change a tire (surf the internet), check my oil (build a website), and put gas in the car (social network). But when it comes to actually knowing the parts of the engine that makes my car run (or get me where I want to go on the internet), I shut down. I turn the radio up, and I am just grateful it carries me where I need to go.
The other day the tech support genius where my website is hosted, informed me of the value of meta tags and said I really need them for my website. The fact that he used the word need, was monumental. Not like a car salesman telling me I need a new Mercedes, but more like a mechanic saying, "Hey lady, your engine needs oil." He was nice and I sensed a bit of, "Man this lady is pathetic," in his voice.
So I have learned the very basics about meta tags and will attempt to plug them into my website. First, of course, I will have the phone number handy for the tech support team if I stumble and pull the wrong plug. It's been known to happen, and there is a reason I stay away from mechanical devices.
However, these meta tags seem to be pretty important, so I will roll up my sleeves and try my hand at installing them. And just in case you don't know what they are, meta tags are precise key words that search engines use to crawl (sounds creepy, but it's not) your site so people can find you with ease online.
I think of them like a GPS for my website. They're not for me to find my way around, but so other people cruising the internet road can find my information. At least I'm pretty sure that's what they are. I'll refer to my manual again...
Wish me luck! I'll let you know how it goes.

Understanding key words can also improve the results of any searches you do. After a while, using them becomes second-nature.
ReplyDeleteOkay, I don't totally get it all either. You are I are passengers in the same boat apparently. Good for you for learning more about it though. :)

I'm usually just glad that Blogger doesn't eat my posts and comments! :)
ReplyDeleteI have no idea about meta tags ... or pretty much anything beyond the absolute basics.
Good luck!
ReplyDeleteMaureen, I'm learning (or trying to learn). It's important to know all of this, I just hope it goes well... :)
ReplyDeleteLisa, I've always known you and I were on the same boat. Now it is confirmed. It's nice to know I'm not alone. :)
ReplyDeleteJemi, that is exactly how I am, too. I have no idea how the 'system' works - just the basics. And honestly, I'd like to stop there. But meta tags are calling my name, or they will be. :D
ReplyDeleteElena, thank you for wishing me luck! I will need it - a lot of it. :)
